Pretty Plastic Panels in AJ Specification

AJ Specification is a specialist publication produced by The Architects’ Journal (AJ), a well-known UK-based architecture magazine – focusing on the technical and material aspects of architectural design.

This edition of AJ Specification highlights exteriors and landscaping, with three case studies from a range of contrasting environments – coastal, suburban and inner-city – and answering very different briefs.

In the first case study, the MawsonKerr-designed Whitburn Coastal Conservation Centre in South Tyneside is featured. Its CLT-panelled structure is clad in distinctive mottled shingles – the Pretty Plastic Panels. These are made of 100 per cent recycled plastic from construction waste, creating a practical rainscreen while making an apt point about reuse, particularly in view of the amount of plastic waste that pollutes our seas and coastlines.
